Jacob Misiorowski robbed of elusive award for second consecutive month

What does the Brewers' ace have to do to win one of these awards?

Despite taking the loss in yesterday afternoon's series finale against the Cincinnati Reds, Jacob Misiorowski has still been the best pitcher in MLB throughout the 2026 season. Miz, who was tagged with just one earned run in yesterday's loss, holds the best ERA among all qualified MLB pitchers by more than half a run, and remains the league leader in WHIP, strikeouts, and opponent batting average.

Any way you spin it, the Brewers' 24-year-old flame-throwing ace has been the most dominant pitcher in baseball this year, which makes the fact that he has yet to earn an NL Pitcher of the Month Award that much more perplexing.

Misiorowski's near-miss during the month of May was heavily publicized. Both he and Philadelphia Phillies' starter Cristopher Sánchez, who have already become rivals in several awards and accolades races, put together historic months. Miz led the league in nearly every category other than earned run average, where Sánchez had him beat. The Brewers' ace allowed just one earned run in six starts during the month of May, but that was one more than Sánchez allowed, and MLB ultimately chose to award the Phillies' southpaw with the NL Pitcher of the Month honor.

The June race was far less talked about, in part because there weren't two starters simultaneously posting two of the best months in MLB history. However, Misiorowski was once again in the running, and just like in May, he narrowly lost to a starter who had just a slightly better ERA.

San Francisco Giants' ace Logan Webb narrowly defeats Jacob Misiorowski in NL Pitcher of the Month race

Misiorowski was once again nearly unhittable during the month of June. He tossed four quality starts, one of which was a 15-strikeout "Maddux" -- a complete-game shutout with less than 100 pitches -- against the Phillies. Miz also navigated a start in Coors Field during the month of June, during which he set a new record for the fastest pitch ever thrown by a starting pitcher (a record he has since broken again) en route to a seven-inning, eight-strikeout performance. All in all, Miz put together another eye-popping stat line during the month of June: 4 GS, 28.0 IP, 0.96 ERA, 0.71 WHIP, 38 K.

However, for as impressive as Misiorowski's month was, it's hard to argue that it was better than the performance that San Francisco Giants' ace Logan Webb put together in June. Webb started one more game than Misiorowski, and posted a better ERA and WHIP. Miz easily won the strikeout battle, but as evidenced by last month's loss to Sánchez, strikeout numbers aren't what matters most to voters. That said, Webb's stat line of 5 GS, 38.0 IP, 0.71 ERA, 0.61 WHIP, 28 K is certainly worthy of the NL Pitcher of the Month Award.

More than anything, it's simply unlucky that Misiorowski has put together two record-breaking months and come up short due to just as impressive performances from Sánchez and Webb. The Brewers' ace certainly had an argument to win in both May and June, but Misiorowski won't care so long as he remains the clear favorite to win the NL Cy Young Award this year.
