In yesterday's series finale against the Colorado Rockies, the Milwaukee Brewers sent their seventh different starting pitcher, Quinn Priester, to the mound. Today, they announced the return of one of their main offseason acquisitions, José Quintana, who will presumably be the eighth different starting pitcher used by the Crew in the young season.
Quintana, who's entering his 14th season in the majors, spent the first two weeks of the regular season in Arizona, continuing to build up after his late start to spring training. The veteran-lefty has been a reliable starter even as he enters his late-30s. He made 76 starts over the last three seasons with the Pirates, Cardinals, and Mets. In those 76 starts, he's posted an impressive 3.39 ERA. For the injury-riddled Milwaukee pitching staff, the news could not have come at a better time.
Quintana will start in tonight's matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks, answering Brewers fans' concerns about who would start the first game of the series opposite Eduardo Rodriguez. However, Quintana has struggled in his career against the D-Backs, posting a 7.44 ERA in seven career starts and a 9.24 ERA in three career starts at Chase Field.

Elvis Peguero optioned to Triple-A Nashville
In the corresponding roster move, the Brewers optioned right-handed reliever to Triple-A, swapping a relief pitcher for a much-needed starter. While Peguero's 5.68 ERA implies that he was destined for a demotion, more context is required. One bad outing has spoiled Peguero's 2025 season to this point. He allowed four earned runs in a four-out outing during the Brewers' home opener against the Kansas City Royals. Apart from that appearance, Peguero hasn't allowed a run across five innings.
Peguero will be an important part of the bullpen throughout the season. As injuries inevitably arise, he will certainly be back with the big league club, potentially throwing high-leverage innings. For now, the Brewers are slowly returning to a healthy starting rotation and will gladly trade a streaky reliever for a reliable starter.
