After wild double-header, Brewers finally know their 2024 NL Wild Card opponent
The outcome of the Mets-Braves doubleheader Monday determined the Brewers initial MLB Playoffs opponent
The Milwaukee Brewers have been in the unusual position of not knowing who their opponent will be in the Wild Card round of the 2024 MLB playoffs. Rain and a hurricane in Georgia forced two games to be postponed last week and the tie-breaker situation to determine who earns the final two playoff spots in the National League had to come down to this double-header.
The Mets and Braves had a pretty simple path to make the playoffs. Just win one game. If they split the twin bill, both teams would be in the postseason. If one team swept, the losing team would be out and the Arizona Diamondbacks would make the field.
The first game was absolutely bonkers. The Braves led for most of it, then the Mets stormed back, batting around in the 8th inning and scoring six runs to take the lead. Then in the bottom half of the 8th, the Braves scored four runs to take the lead right back after closer Edwin Diaz forgot to cover first base on a ground ball to Pete Alonso.
Then after all that, the Mets take the lead again on a home run by Francisco Lindor. It was pure cinema. The Mets held on to win the first game 8-7. They had secured a Wild Card berth. Then it comes down to game two. Atlanta needed to win to make the playoff field and the Diamondbacks needed the Mets to win once more.
The Braves took the lead early on in this game as well, but this time they held on, securing a 3-0 victory and a doubleheader split.
The Milwaukee Brewers will face the New York Mets in the Wild Card round of the 2024 MLB Playoffs
That means the Mets and Braves finish with the same record, the Braves own the tiebreaker making them the 5th seed, who will fly out to San Diego to face the Padres in the first round. That means the Mets are the 6th seed and will hop on a plane right back to Milwaukee where they will face the Brewers.
The Mets and Brewers just faced off for the final three games of the regular season. The Brewers won the first two games, helping force this maximum chaos situation. They also swept the Mets at the beginning of the year, holding a 5-1 record against New York this year.
After having to expend a lot of energy winning game one and still having to fill another nine innings afterward, this Mets team is expected to be tired and not in the best shape for this best-of-three Wild Card round. That doesn't mean the Brewers can take them lightly though. They have to continue to put their foot on the gas and not give the Mets any hope that Sunday's win gave them momentum.
Game 1 is Tuesday at 4:30 PM and the Brewers will have Freddy Peralta on the mound.
