Brewers News: Corbin Burnes Added to 2023 All-Star Game, Devin Williams Won't Pitch

With the 2023 All-Star Game just three days away, the Brewers have had a second player added to the roster, though it might not be the player you were expecting.

Corbin Burnes, fresh off a win against the Cincinnati Reds at home on Friday night, was named as an All-Star replacement on Saturday. He'll take the place of the Atlanta Braves' Spencer Strider who starts on Saturday night and likely wouldn't have been able to pitch in the game because of it.

Burnes hasn't exactly been his usual dominant self this season for Milwaukee. Through 18 games, he is 7-5 with a 3.94 ERA, a 1.137 WHIP. That ERA and WHIP are still solid, but would be his highest marks since the 2019 season. He's also striking out batters at his lowest rate (23.1%) since his rookie 2018 season.

Still, as the Brewers' ace, a former NL Cy Young winner, and member of the last two NL All-Star rosters, he has earned the respect of many across the league for his abilities. This season, that means a third straight All-Star nod.

While Brewers ace Corbin Burnes will pitch in the 2023 All-Star Game, star closer Devin Williams will not.

Prior to Burnes' addition to the All-Star Game, closer Devin Williams had been the lone representative for Milwaukee when he was named to the original roster. Though he will still represent the team, it won't be as a player in the actual game.

Along with the news about Burnes on Saturday, it was also revealed that Williams was being replaced himself. His spot on the roster is being taken by reliever Craig Kimbrel of the Philadelphia Phillies.

If you're worried about a potential injury to one of the Brewers' best pitchers you can set your fears aside. As Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on Twitter, Williams' absence is because of his heavy workload as of late.

Williams has indeed pitched a lot lately making appearances in 8 of the last 13 days. If he hadn't needed to pitch on Friday night, Williams might still be planning on an All-Star appearance. But with a four-run lead in the ninth inning, Tyson Miller (who was subsequently DFA'd on Saturday) got into trouble and Williams had to come in and finish the job, thus sealing his All-Star fate.

The 2023 MLB All-Star Game takes place next Tuesday, July 11th in Seattle, Washington. First pitch is scheduled for 7pm
