Today it was announced the order for the Competitive Balance round selections in the 2023 MLB Draft. Where did the Milwaukee Brewers get slotted?

MLB instituted the Competitive Balance rounds in the Draft as a way to give small market and low revenue clubs extra picks early in the Draft to help build their farm systems and try to be competitive with larger market clubs who can afford to build however great of a team they want. The Brewers are one of those beneficiaries of these rounds.

There are two Competitive Balance rounds, Round A and Round B. Round A is between the 1st round and 2nd round and Round B is between the 2nd round and 3rd round.

In 2023, the Milwaukee Brewers are in Round A.

MLB has awarded the Brewers the third selection in Competitive Balance Round A in the 2023 MLB Draft.

The Brewers get another early selection in the 2023 MLB Draft with their CB pick falling in the first half of Round A. This pick will likely fall around the early 30s overall but isn't yet fully known because of remaining free agents with qualifying offers on the market that could impact the draft order ahead.

This is great news. Milwaukee was in Competitive Balance Round B in 2022, and they used that selection on Arkansas INF Robert Moore. But because that pick was so late, the Brewers had a lower bonus pool amount to use on all their selections.

Next year, the Brewers bonus pool projects to be much higher, not only because of their CB pick being in Round A, but because their spot in the draft order is much higher. They will be selecting 18th in each of the 20 normal rounds this year, although it's still possible they could be selecting much earlier in the first round.

MLB has a draft lottery beginning this year, with the lottery being held at the Winter Meetings. There's a small chance the Brewers could win a spot in that draft lottery and get a top six selection. That would not only help improve their bonus pool total, but give them an opportunity for a top six talent on the board without having to be a bottom six team in the league to get it.

The Brewers have received a Competitive Balance pick every year that it's been in place, and the rounds usually alternate each year, meaning in 2024, the Brewers are likely to be back in Round B.
