On March 14, the Milwaukee Brewers announced star closer Devin Williams would be out of action for three months with two stress fractures in his back. The reigning NL Reliever of the Year is now back on the mound and is making some of the best hitters in baseball look silly.

Milwaukee held the top spot in the NL Central despite their loss of Williams, but on July 28 he returned to action against the Miami Marlins and since then, it's like he never went away. His pitching has returned to the elite level we know and his clutch continues to shine on the mound as the Brewers recently split the series with Los Angeles Dodgers and Williams recorded back-to-back saves.

His return against the Marlins saw him strike out one batter and give up no runs, impressive having been out of action for almost 100 days. The Washington Nationals fell to the same fate despite the team's loss, then the Atlanta Braves are the only team to have scored a run on Williams this season.

The recent three games Williams has pitched in has seen him not give up a hit or a walk. Cincinnati saw all three of their batters strikeout as Williams recorded the save in the Brewers 1-0 victory. Then came the series with the Dodgers.

With Milwaukee down 0-2 and struggling on both sides of the ball, Williams was the last line of defence and he stood up strong to the star studded Dodgers. On Wednesday 14 August, Brewers were up 5-4 with Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman all stepping up in the top fo the ninth. Three of the most feared batters in baseball had to take on the best closer and failed. Ohtani flew out, Betts struck out and Freeman ground out. That wasn't it for Williams' work though.

The following night, Milwaukee up 6-4 and Williams does it once again. Andy Pages popped out before Betts and Ohtani had the chance to turn the tide and claim the series for the Dodgers and assert themselves atop the National League. A fierce changeup caught Betts swinging and Ohtani missed on a high fastball to an outbreak of cheers from the Brewers crowd and a bellow and fist pump from the hyped Williams.

All season long the Brewers have suffered with injuries and the bullpen is without Abner Uribe, Hoby Milner and Trevor Megill so the timing of Williams' return couldn't be any better. The loss of Christian Yelich is also significant offensively and so having the elite closer is a huge boost if the offence stagnates.

There is a month and a half left of regular season baseball and the Brewers have a healthy league-high nine game lead on the rest of the NL Central. Williams will continue to work his way through the rest of the season as he returns after so long out, so expect it to ramp up for the postseason where he will be potentially more valuable than ever.
