Ladies and gentlemen, we finally made it. The Milwaukee Brewers are set to take on the New York Mets in Game 1 of this year's NL Wild Card Series. The Crew rather easily finished in the top spot in the NL Central this year, going 93-69 and finishing 10 games above the second-place Cubs. Over in the East, the Mets and Braves tied for second in the division, but both made it into the postseason as wild card teams after a wild doubleheader between the two to end the 2024 season.
In the regular season this year, the Brewers owned the Mets in head-to-head matchups, going 5-1 overall, highlighted by a season-opening sweep. Milwaukee will be sporting mostly the same roster, so hopefully that trend sticks in this series.
Probable starting pitchers
Taking the mound for the Brewers will be right-hander Freddy Peralta, who's preparing to make one of the biggest starts of his life. The 28-year-old functioned as Milwaukee's staff ace this year and while he ran into a bit of inconsistencies down the stretch, he still finished 11-9 with a respectable 3.68 ERA and 114 ERA+ through a career-high 173.2 innings of work. In his postseason career, Peralta is 0-1 with a 3.46 ERA through four games (two starts) and 13 innings.
Opposite Peralta will be resurgent right-hander Luis Severino. The Mets hurler had his best full season in a while in 2024, going 11-7 with a 3.91 ERA and 101 ERA+ across 31 starts and 182 innings. He showed what he can do when healthy and the Mets lucked out by getting him on a rare healthy season. He's under contract as a rental and has set himself up nicely for a payday in the upcoming offseason. Severino's playoff career is much more extensive than Peralta's, but he's only managed a 5.15 ERA through 11 outings (10 starts) and 43.2 innings.
