Prospects Andrew Fischer, Josh Knoth named Players of the Year in Brewers' top-ranked farm system

It's rare to see a small-market team in Major League Baseball win 103 games over the course of the regular season. It's even rarer to see such a team do so while sporting the best farm system in baseball. However, that's exactly what the Milwaukee Brewers accomplished in 2026. As their major league squad turned in the best regular season in franchise history, Milwaukee's loaded minor league system continued to impress.

The Brewers' farm system is overflowing with talent. From the top prospect in all of baseball, teenage infielder Jesús Made, to the Southern League MVP, slugging first baseman Blake Burke, to a pair of recent early round picks in Braylon Payne and Brady Ebel, both of whom broke out in 2026, there's talent in every corner of the Brewers' farm system. As a result of this overwhelming amount of highly-ranked prospects, the Brewers elected to name finalists for their Player of the Year Awards for the first time ever, as noted in the post below from MLB.com's Brewers beat reporter Adam McCalvy.

While naming finalists was an excellent way for the Brewers to recognize more than just the lone Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Year, which are technically called the Robin Yount Performance Awards, there must be a winner in the end. As announced by the organization just moments ago, corner infielder and 2025 first-round pick Andrew Fischer has been named the Brewers Minor League Player of the Year, and right-hander Josh Knoth, who was selected with the 33rd overall pick in the 2023 draft, has been named the Minor League Pitcher of the Year.

Brewers' 2026 Minor League Players of the Year validate highly successful recent draft strategy

Fischer was the clear choice for the Player of the Year after his historic 2026 season. The slugging left-hander crushed 48 homers (and two more in the postseason) in 126 games split between High-A and Double-A. Those 48 longballs are the most by a minor leaguer in a single season since 1982, and are the second most by a Brewers' minor leaguer in franchise history, trailing only Gorman Thomas, who crushed 51 back in 1974. Fischer ultimately slashed .273/.413/.654, good for an incredible 1.067 OPS during his head-turning 2026 campaign.

Knoth's strong 2026 season was especially encouraging given the fact that the 21-year-old right-hander was making his return from Tommy John surgery. Knoth, who was selected out of high school three years ago, turned in a 4.33 ERA in 68.2 innings pitched with the High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers before earning a promotion to Double-A in late August. He made three regular season starts for the Double-A Biloxi Shuckers at the end of the season, during which he posted a 2.77 ERA with 13 strikeouts, a 1.08 WHIP, and a .191 opponent batting average in 13 innings pitched. Knoth was also the Shuckers' Game 1 starter in the Southern League Championship Series, and allowed just two earned runs in six innings of work.

It's an encouraging sign that each of the Brewers' Minor League Players of the Year in 2026 are recent high draft picks. Yes, the Brewers do an excellent job of finding talent throughout the MLB Draft and on the international free agent market, but that doesn't change the fact that it's especially important to draft well in the early rounds of the amateur draft. As previously mentioned, Fischer was the team's 2025 first-round selection, and Knoth was the team's Competitive Balance Round A pick in the 2023 draft.

Milwaukee's recent draft strategy, which has yielded them players like Brice Turang, Garrett Mitchell, and Sal Frelick in the first round, and players like Jacob Misiorowski and Logan Henderson in early rounds as well, has clearly been successful as of late. That trend appears to be unchanging with recent top draft picks like Fischer and Knoth leading the way in the minor leagues.
