Here's a fun one: dating back to 2014, a Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher has been at the All-Star Game (ASG) in all but two seasons (2016 and 2024). This year, that trend will continue, as Major League Baseball announced that the Brewers' closer, Trevor Megill, is headed to Atlanta next week after earning his first All-Star selection. The announcement came shortly after Megill struck out the side with three fastballs over 100 mph in the 10th inning of Wednesday's series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers, setting the team up to win in walk-off fashion to sweep the defending champions.

While Megill's performance yesterday afternoon was certainly impressive, it's nothing out of the ordinary for the 31-year-old flamethrower, who is having an unbelievable start to his first full season as Milwaukee's closer. In 36 appearances, Megill has converted on 21 of his 24 save opportunities, posted a 2.41 ERA, and struck out 43 batters in 33.2 innings covered. Additionally, opposing hitters are batting less than .200 against the Brewers' closer this season. Megill is averaging more rise (in terms of induced vertical break) on his four-seam fastball and more drop on his knuckle curve in 2025 compared to 2024, according to Baseball Savant. The result has been a dominant and stabilizing force at the back-end of the Brewers bullpen.

Interestingly enough, Megill's inclusion in the Midsummer Classic is connected to a decision that Milwaukee's other All-Star, Freddy Peralta, made in regard to his participation in next week's ASG.

Trevor Megill selected to "replace" Freddy Peralta on the National League's 2025 All-Star Game roster

No need to worry, Freddy Peralta is still an All-Star; that honor is not taken away from the Brewers' ace. However, with Peralta set to pitch on Sunday afternoon in the Crew's series finale against the Washington Nationals, he has elected not to throw in the ASG, which will take place just two days later on Tuesday, July 15.

When pitchers decide not to participate in the ASG, they are "replaced" with another pitcher who could pitch in the contest. It serves as a way to bestow the "All-Star" distinction on several more deserving players. But don't fret, Peralta and Megill will be standing next to each other down the baseline as the NL roster is announced ahead of next Tuesday's game.

Today's update means the Brewers’ streak of having multiple All-Stars continues for a seventh straight year (not including 2020 when there was no ASG). The most recent year in which Milwaukee had just one representative in the Midsummer Classic is 2017, when Corey Knebel was the team's lone representative.

Next week's All-Star Game will air on FOX at 7:00 p.m. CT, though coverage will begin an hour earlier. Be sure to tune in to see both Freddy Peralta and Trevor Megill honored for their impressive first halves and maybe see Megill match up against the AL's best hitters.
