This outfielder’s Brewers tenure is coming to an end

As Blake Perkins nears a return, Daz Cameron’s limited production and lack of options make his roster spot vulnerable.

Daz Cameron's time in Milwaukee might be running out.

With outfielder Blake Perkins inching closer to a return from the injured list, Cameron’s hold on a roster spot is growing shaky. And with no minor-league options remaining, the Brewers can’t send him down without exposing him to waivers. That could very well be the route they take — and soon.

Perkins, who fractured his shin back in late February, began a rehab assignment with the Arizona Complex League on June 14. In seven games, he's slashed .389/.500/.389, collecting two RBI, a stolen base, and a 4:4 walk-to-strikeout ratio. Now in Triple-A Nashville, if all goes to plan, he could rejoin the Brewers by early July, leaving Cameron in a precarious position.

Crowded outfield could force Brewers to move on from Daz Cameron

The 28-year-old outfielder has struggled to find any consistent role in Milwaukee this season, appearing in just 21 games while logging only 42 plate appearances. His .195 average and .507 OPS are tough to look at in isolation, but the sample is small. Still, a 31 percent strikeout rate and paltry 2.4 walk rate don’t help his case, even if they’re slightly inflated due to sporadic usage.

Cameron’s role has clearly been that of a bench piece — a late-inning defensive option or right-handed bat off the bench — and the results haven’t been enough to justify continued at-bats. His limited offensive showing has all but confirmed that he isn’t viewed as part of Milwaukee’s long-term outfield mix.

Still, there are flashes worth noting. In Triple-A earlier this year, Cameron showed off the same tantalizing tools that once made him a well-regarded prospect. And Statcast metrics in the majors — like a 91.9 mph average exit velocity and decent barrel rates — suggest there's still some pop in his bat. But even with that upside, Milwaukee can’t afford the roster spot.

With Perkins set to return and the Brewers aiming towards a postseason race, tough roster decisions are inevitable. For Daz Cameron, it’s looking more and more like the numbers game will catch up with him — and that his time in Milwaukee is nearing its end.
