Even before they busted their 108-year drought back in 2016, it was a common occurrence for Chicago Cubs fans to wave their dusty old championship banners in the faces of the Milwaukee Brewers' faithful, repeatedly reminding everyone that the Crew had never won a World Series.
Well, at long last, that piece of showmanship died on October 28, 2026. The Brewers have, in fact, won a championship, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays in five games. It marked the conclusion to a wholly dominant campaign, one which featured a franchise-record 103 wins in the regular season and an 11-2 record in the postseason.
Naturally, Trevor Megill wasn't about to let the moment pass him by. Shortly after recording the final out of the Fall Classic, he was asked what message he wanted to leave Brewers fans with. His response was as emphatic as it was in character.

A fun little factoid to now drop on your Chicago-based friends (or enemies): The Cubs and Brewers now have the same number of titles since 1909, even though the latter only came into existence 60 years into that stretch.
Brewers destroy Cubs narratives once and for all with long-awaited championship
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the fact that the Brewers hardly needed this title to flex on the Cubs. Milwaukee has made the playoffs in eight of the past nine seasons, including five division titles in the last six years. In that time (i.e., since the start of the 2021 season), the Crew own a 54-36 record over their rivals from the Windy City.
That doesn't even include their triumph in the 2025 NLDS, when they won the only postseason series these two storied franchises have ever played. Maybe "flying the L" was a little premature in the moment -- it certainly didn't look good after the Brewers flopped in last year's NLCS -- but it's a gesture they've backed up with their sterling play ever since.
It'd also be foolish not to mention all the talks about "Wrigley North" and how thoroughly the Brewers quashed that narrative as well. Their fans were not only the most boisterous at home this postseason, but they completely took over the Trop during the Fall Classic. Meanwhile, the Cubs didn't even technically play a game during October this year (they were swept in the Wild Card Round on September 30).
Of course, the Cubs shouldn't be what Brewers fans are spending most of their time thinking about right now. This is a moment of celebration -- one that will finally bring the Commissioner's Trophy to Milwaukee.
