The Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs sit atop the NL Central standings together, as just three days remain before the midseason MLB Trade Deadline. In what is sure to be a contentious match-up, the Brewers and Cubs begin a three-game series tonight at American Family Field. To add even more intrigue, tonight's game will feature a pitching matchup of 2025 All-Stars, with Matthew Boyd going for the Cubs and rookie sensation Jacob Misiorowski toeing the rubber for the Brew Crew.
Ahead of tonight's highly anticipated contest, let's recap a few storylines that emerged over the course of Monday afternoon, starting with the lineups that managers Pat Murphy and Craig Counsell are rolling with in the series opener.
Milwaukee Brewers vs. Chicago Cubs (7/28/25) starting lineups
It's been over a month since the Brewers and Cubs played each other. During their last series, which took place at Wrigley Field, game two was rained out, and rather than play a double-header on the following day, the Cubs elected to push the makeup game back to August. A main reason for that decision from the Cubs was that they didn't want to face Misiorowski and Freddy Peralta in two games of a double-header. Tonight, The Miz finally gets a crack at the Cubbies, and here's the lineup he will face:

Meanwhile, the Brewers also face a tough task in Cubs' starter Matthew Boyd. Boyd is 6-0 with a 1.02 ERA in his last seven starts, collecting 38 strikeouts to just six walks during that time. Something to note, however, is that Boyd has already pitched more innings this year than he did in any of his last five MLB seasons, and at some point, fatigue may start to set in for the 34-year-old southpaw. Here's the Brewers lineup that he will face tonight:

Craig Yoho rejoins the big league roster, Tobias Myers optioned to Triple-A
The Brewers are adding a true reliever to their bullpen ahead of tonight's matchup with the Cubs. As announced by the team this morning, Craig Yoho has rejoined the major league roster, and Tobias Myers is headed back down to Triple-A Nashville.
Myers had been working out of the bullpen for the Brewers over the last week, making two strong appearances in relief. Last Wednesday, he tossed two scoreless innings against the Seattle Mariners, allowing just one hit and striking out three batters in the process. He followed that up with a scoreless inning of work against the Miami Marlins on Friday, in which he allowed no hits and struck out one opposing hitter. In what has been a disappointing season for Myers, finding some success in the big leagues, albeit in a relief role, should be encouraging for the second-year right-hander.
Meanwhile, Yoho is back with the big league roster in a "permanent" capacity. Permanent isn't the right word as Yoho could be shuttled back to the minor leagues at any point, but it differentiates between his current stint with the Crew, and the last time he pitched for the Brewers, which was as the 27th man during the team's double-header against the New York Mets earlier in the month.
As covered by Reviewing the Brew over the weekend, Yoho has been dominant in Triple-A since his last stint in the big leagues. He's thrown 23.2 innings for the Nashville Sounds during that span and posted a 1.52 ERA with 31 strikeouts.

Rob Zastryzny suffers injury setback, return timeline uncertain
Left-handed reliever Rob Zastryzny was nearing a return from the 15-day IL, which he landed on with stress fractures in his ribs back on July 1. However, as revealed by several Brewers insiders, including Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Zastryzny has suffered a setback during his recovery process and will require more time on the IL.

A rib/lat issue that Pat Murphy deemed “concerning.”
It's an unfortunate setback for Zastryzny, who was in the midst of his best season in MLB before landing on the IL. Through 15 appearances with the Brewers this year, which includes one appearance as an "opener," Zastryzny holds a 2.03 ERA and has struck out 15 batters in 13.1 innings pitched.
In his stead, Pat Murphy will continue to rely on southpaw Jared Koenig for one-inning appearances and lefties Aaron Ashby and DL Hall for multi-inning outings. Depending on how long Zastryzny will be out, which should be revealed following his upcoming imaging, the Brewers may look to add a left-handed reliever to their bullpen before Thursday's trade deadline.
