As news of the passing of Brewers radio legend Bob Uecker started spreading, people from all corners began memorializing the man we belovedly called "Ueck". That was thing about the legend of Bob Uecker, he transcended the game of baseball. For some, he was a WWE Hall of Famer who got choked out by Andre the Giant. For others, he was George Owens, the man who employed the titular Mr. Belvedere or Harry Doyle, the play by play man Harry Doyle in the Major League film franchise. For others yet, he was the man who made Johnny Carson laugh 100 times. For an even smaller few he was simply Bob, or dad.
Many Brewers players, both past and present, are pouring in tributes. Orlando Arcia, Brent Suter, Corbin Burnes, Ryan Braun (via his wife), Willy Adames, and Freddy Peralta are among many posting on the Instagram stories, sharing some of their favorite pictures of themselves with Uecker.
Many far and wide are sharing their favorite memories and thoughts about Bob Uecker and it is beautiful
Jonathan Lucroy took to X/Twitter to share a tribute, as well as a story from his earlier playing days when Ueck took the young catcher fishing.
Of the current generation of Milwaukee Brewers players, there was likely no one closer to the play by play man than Christian Yelich. Last fall, when the Brewers lost in the NL Wild Card Series to the New York Mets, Yelich was clearly emotional when talking about tough the loss was, especially after talking to Bob Uecker. Yelich, like many of us, was hopeful Uecker would be back in the booth for 2025.
In reaction to the news, Yelich took to social media, posting a heartfelt tribute to Uecker over on Instagram where shared how much Uecker meant to him and how he wished he just more time to spend with him.
It wasn't just players paying tribute to Ueck. Former Brewers owner and Commissioner Emeritus Bud Selig released a statement courtesy of the Brewers.
As did current MLB Comissioner Rob Manfred:
WWE Superstar Adam Scheer, better known as Braun Strowman, who has many ties to the Brewers including part of his wrestling name, shared tribute after having been around the team a few times over the past few seasons.
Numerous other tributes have been coming in as well from across the sports world, as Milwaukee native and former NFL star JJ Watt, Packers running back AJ Dillon, former A's pitcher and social media personality Dallas Braden, the Packers and Bucks social media pages, and other MLB teams have posted tributes as well.
Fellow media members such as former Brewers writer Tom Haudricourt, Bob Costas, and Brewers TV play by play guy Brian Anderson were among many to join various outlets to pay tribute:
Brewers beat reporter Adam McCalvy joined Foul Territory TV, talking about Uecker's passion for the team, including fighting to call what would be his last ballgame.
On a personal note, this one is tough. Listening to Uecker was a staple of growing up in Wisconsin. Whether it be those first couple spring training games, letting you know that summer was near, sneaking the radio on when the Brewers were on one of the West Coast roadtrips when you were supposed to be sleeping, or sitting around outside, listening to Mr. Baseball call the action and tell stories on our favorite team.
Ueck was an inspiration. I was never fortunate enough to meet him, but if I had, I would say thank you. Thank you for all the memories of listening to the Brewers with my now departed grandma, and other family and friends who are still with us. Thank you for inspiring me to follow these crazy dreams of covering Milwaukee Brewers baseball, and calling local games.
Finally, thank you for being a perfect representative of what summer in Wisconsin was all about. Tonight I will crack a Miller Lite, grill up some Usinger sausages, and finish off with a pint of Cedar Crest ice cream, celebrating the fantastic life and memories of our old friend, Bob Uecker.
