For a team as budget-conscious as the Milwaukee Brewers, it is of paramount importance to have a steady stream of talent coming from the minor leagues. Unless the midwest version of Steve Cohen pops up and buys the team, the Brewers are extremely unlikely to make many splashes in the free agent market. That means that Milwaukee simply has to hit on their draft picks as well as on the international free agent market.
While the 2025 MLB Draft is a long ways away, the international signing period opens up on January 15, 2025 and presents the Brewers with yet another crucial opportunity. The international market has treated well in the past as they signed Jackson Chourio for $1.8 million back in 2021 out of Venezuela and that obviously is off to a tremendous start so far.
With an international bonus pool of $7,555,500 in 2025, the Brewers have among the most money to spend on international free agents once the market opens up. True to form, it sounds like Milwaukee is looking to sign a number of players instead of going all-in on one guy. However, that doesn't mean they won't end up with a top talent as they are expected to sign outfielder Kenny Fenelon out of the Dominican Republic and he has the upside to be one of the best players in the class when it is all said and done.
Brewers poised to sign electric IFA outfielder Kenny Fenelon in January
There is a lot to like about Fenelon right out of the gate. While he isn't the biggest guy as of now (remember, these are still teenagers and their bodies are going to change), the 6'0 outfielder already possesses real raw power and speed which, if everything breaks the right way, could make him a legitimate 30-30 threat in the big leagues. His pure athleticism seems to be giving scouts optimism that he could stick in center field as well.
Of course, Fenelon is very far away from the majors and Brewers fans should pump the brakes on the hype train for the moment. Baseball America's Ben Badler also revealed that Fenelon is going to require some development and coaching to be less vulnerable to breaking stuff and while he is uber athletic, his game is still very raw overall.
With the expected departure of Willy Adames and the reality that he probably won't be the last Brewers star to leave once they get expensive, keeping the talent pipeline flowing is the only way Milwaukee will remain contenders. The Brewers have Jesus Made and Cooper Pratt on the way up the minor league ranks right now and it sounds like Milwaukee is laying yet another solid foundation for the future as well.
