Over the last week, several top prospects in the Milwaukee Brewers' farm system have earned promotions to the next level of the minor leagues.
Last Tuesday, slugging first baseman Blake Burke, who the Brewers drafted with the 34th pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, earned a promotion to Triple-A after breaking the Double-A Biloxi Shuckers' single-season home run record. On that same day, Milwaukee promoted 2025 second-round pick J.D. Thompson, a left-handed starter with a 3.90 ERA in nine starts with the High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, to Double-A. Three days later, the Brewers promoted 2024 first-rounder Braylon Payne to Double-A amid his breakout season.
Then, on Sunday evening, the Brewers announced that both Ebel brothers, Brady and Trey, who were selected by Milwaukee in the 2025 and 2026 MLB Drafts, respectively, were earning late-season promotions. Brady, after enjoying his own breakout season in Low-A with the Wilson Warbirds, is headed to Appleton to join the Timber Rattlers for their final stretch. Trey, meanwhile, is replacing Brady on the Warbirds' roster where he will make his official professional debut at just 17 years old.
However, after the prospect promotion frenzy over the last week, the Brewers still weren't done. As announced by the team earlier today, Milwaukee's No. 2-ranked prospect, infielder Luis Peña, has earned a promotion from High-A to Double-A, where he will join the Shuckers for their postseason run. Not only does the promotion continue what has been a rapid progression through the Brewers' farm system for the still-19-year-old Peña, but it also reunites him with top prospect Jesús Made, with whom he has played for much of his professional career.

Brewers promote Luis Peña to Double-A, reunite him with Jesús Made for Biloxi Shuckers' stretch run
Peña and Made, both of whom hail from the Dominican Republic, began their tenures in the Brewers' farm system back in 2024, competing alongside one another in the Dominican Summer League. Impressive campaigns in that debut professional season earned them both a ticket straight to Low-A, skipping the Arizona Complex League in the process. Around this time last year, the pair was simultaneously promoted to High-A, where Made got even better, and Peña's production briefly stalled. Made was then promoted to Double-A for the Shuckers' postseason run last year while Peña remained with the Timber Rattlers.
The teenage infielders each began the 2026 campaign where they finished the 2025 season: Made in Double-A and Peña in High-A. However, the expectation was that Peña would soon join his teammate in Biloxi so long as he impressed during the early parts of the 2026 season. Unfortunately, Peña instead suffered a scary, dehydration-related incident in late April that caused him to miss a month's worth of games and ultimately delayed his promotion to Double-A.
However, once Peña settled in after missing most of May, he was his usual productive self. On the season, Peña has a .305 batting average and an .831 OPS. The right-handed hitting Peña has collected just two homers, but has 17 extra-base hits and 29 stolen bases to his name in 54 games this year.
Peña served as the T-Rats' everyday shortstop when healthy this year, but also has experience at second and third base during his minor league career. That defensive versatility will be important in Biloxi, as the Shuckers are likely to continue playing Made at shortstop every game even after Peña's promotion. With Dylan O'Rae impressing as the Shuckers' second baseman and Fischer playing more first base as of late, it's likely Peña sees most of his playing time at third base during the remaining weeks of the 2026 season.
The Shuckers have already secured their spot in the 2026 postseason thanks to their first-half title, but the Brewers' Double-A affiliate has been scuffling as of late. Peña's addition to the roster should give the offense an extra boost down the stretch as they prepare for another run in the Southern League playoffs.
