The Milwaukee Brewers and their fans are still reeling from the news of Bob Uecker's passing this week. He was simply the best of the best and the sheer amount of love and support pouring out right now is a testament to the amazing legacy he has left behind. This one is going to hurt for a while and one hopes that the Brewers can go out next season and play their brains out in memory of him.
Before we can really look forward, it is important to remember all the laughs and wisdom (and more laughs) he imparted upon the world during his remarkable life. He was a big leaguer, an actor, and obviously a long-tenured broadcaster and all parts of Uecker's life were filled with great quotes and musings that are going to stay etch in our lexicon for many, many years to come.
Here are some of the best Bob Uecker quotes (at least that we know about)
The goal here isn't to be a completionist by any stretch. The sheer number of quotes from Uecker that are worth remembering while laughing hysterically is just too long to even attempt that. Here are just some of our favorites ranging from his playing days, his incredibly quotable appearance in Major League, as well as during his time as the Brewers' "Mr. Baseball".
- "If a guy hits .300 every year, what does he have to look forward to? I always tried to stay around .190, with three or four RBI. And I tried to get them all in September. That way I always had something to talk about during the winter."
Uecker was famously self-deprecating about his time as a player and this is a classic example. He would be the first to tell you that he wasn't a particularly good player, but his stories captured everyone's attention and were a mortal lock to leave you in stitches before he was done telling them.
- "Juuuuuuuuuust a bit outside. Ball four. Ball eight!"
A classic from Major League here. Uecker added an authenticity to the role as the then-Indians broadcaster and if you ask anyone to quote that movie, this quote is the one you are most likely to hear. This quote is one you can expect to hear f
- "I remember one time I'm batting against the Dodgers in Milwaukee. They lead, 2 –1, it's the bottom of the ninth, bases loaded, two out and the pitcher has a full count on me. I look over to the Dodger dugout and they're all in street clothes."
This one is another well-known anecdote from Uecker's playing days, but a truly great one. Not sure there has been another career .200 hitter who fans remember their career so fondly, but that was the magic of Bob Uecker at it's finest. To Uecker's credit, the number of guys who homered off of Sandy Koufax, Fergie Jenkins, and Gaylord Perry is a short list and
- "The easiest way to catch a knuckleball was to wait until it stopped rolling and just pick it up"
This one is definitely relatable to any catcher who has tried to receive for a guy throwing knuckleballs. However, Uecker had the brutal task/honor of trying to catch for the best knuckleballer ever in Phil Niekro. Suffice it to say, he found himself having some difficulties doing so, but the results were absolutely hilarious.
Hopefully remembering some of those quotes will bring a smile during what is a really, really tough time knowing that we won't get to hear Uecker on the mic again. At the end of the day, he would have probably wanted it that way.
