In case you missed it, the Milwaukee Brewers traded Freddy Peralta to the New York Mets last night. Alongside Peralta, the Brewers sent Tobias Myers to New York in exchange for top prospects Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat. Grading the Brewers' blockbuster Freddy Peralta trade with the New York Mets
Though losing Peralta, who was not only the team's ace for the last two seasons but also a fan favorite -- a result of his seemingly ever-positive attitude and the love that he showed Milwaukee -- is not an easy pill to swallow, Brewers fans have grown accustomed to this proven strategy over the last several years. Dating back to the 2022 trade deadline, the Brewers have parted ways with All-Star pitchers Josh Hader, Corbin Burnes, Devin Williams, and now Peralta prior to their final year under team control.
It's never easy watching a star, especially one who has developed in the Brewers farm system before breaking out in the big leagues, depart, but the results of the last eight years speak for themselves. The Brewers are in the midst of their most successful run in franchise history, and due to their ability to continuously restock their roster with exciting young talent, it doesn't look like that window is closing anytime soon.
The Brewers, who have won the NL Central in each of the last three seasons and four times in the last five years, boast one of, if not the best farm systems in all of baseball. Achieving that level of sustained success in the smallest market in baseball is going to require some difficult decisions. One such decision was made last night when the Brewers sent Peralta to the Mets, but the talent that they received in return should have fans encouraged about the future in Milwaukee. Here is where Williams and Sproat stack up against the Brewers' top-ranked prospects.
Per MLB Pipeline's rankings, Jett Williams is now the Brewers' No. 3-ranked prospect, Brandon Sproat checks in at No. 6
With both Williams and Sproat officially being added to the Brewers' organization last night, MLB Pipeline has updated their rankings of Milwaukee's top prospects. It's important to note that the popular prospect evaluation site is currently in the process of releasing their updated rankings for the 2026 season, so both Williams and Sproat's rankings in the Brewers' system could change in the coming days.
However, as things currently stand, Williams, who has the ability to play shortstop, second base, and all three outfield positions, currently slots in as the third-best prospect in Milwaukee, trailing only Jesús Made and Luis Peña. Given the fact that Cooper Pratt checks in as the No. 4-ranked prospect in the Brewers' system, Milwaukee's top four prospects are all shortstops, but each of them is a versatile-enough defender that at-bats shouldn't be hard to come by.
Meanwhile, Sproat becomes the Brewers' No. 6-ranked prospect and their new top-ranked pitching prospect. In between Sproat and Milwaukee's swath of shortstop prospects is Jeferson Quero, who, as things currently stand, will be William Contreras' back-up in 2026. Sproat is currently one spot above Logan Henderson on Pipeline's rankings, but both are likely to lose their prospect status early on in the 2026 season. Like Henderson, the 25-year-old Sproat made his MLB debut last season, collecting four starts between September 7 and the end of the regular season.
Losing Peralta hurts, that much is undeniable, but Brewers fans should be very excited about the talent they added to their organization last night. On top of being some of the highest-ranked prospects in the Brewers' system, both Williams and Sproat are MLB-ready players, likely to impact the Milwaukee's big-league squad in 2026. For Brewers fans hoping for the team's sustained success approach to continue for the foreseeable future, last night's blockbuster was no doubt a positive development.
